Boys tennis get their second league win
On Tues. April 18, Samo’s boys tennis team brought another needed win against El Segundo,12-6, that will undoubtedly be helpful towards the end of season as CIF gets closer.
According to coach Winston Poon, during preseason the team lacked efficiency, but as the matches began, the team stood up to the plate, taking initiative and winning.
Christian Bushnell (’18) is positive about the team’s second win and already sees his group making it to CIF as the last three games were indisputably better.
“The overall today was obviously positive given that we won but aside from that I must emphasize that singles and doubles worked hard, took advantage of every single game they played, and materialized those games into wins,” Bushnell said.
Jasper Shine (’19), one of the youngest players on varsity, believes their winning streak illustrates the effort the group has put in.
“I’m really satisfied with the team’s performance today, I think today’s victory is crucial because winning at the beginning of season allows us to relax a little and gives us more confidence to confront the upcoming tough games that we will be playing the following week,” Shine said. “On the other hand, the only negative points I can think of are the injury of our best player which made him leave the courts and maybe the fact we still have to learn more how to play together as a whole.”
According to Poon, the team has slightly improved in some areas although their last games have been too tied. The games were close matches, but Samo was not playing with all their starting players.
“We need to work on our doubles as we have been losing many matches lately in that area,” Poon said. “Our singles are doing great, we are currently second in league and have little time to make improvements. We hope to play well against Beverly Hills next Tuesday, hopefully we will go in confident and maintain our winning streak.”
