Boys water polo wins first round of CIFs
On Tuesday, Oct. 31, the Samo varsity boy’s water polo team won against Cypress High School in the first round of CIF. The final score was 11-7.
The teams were both prepared for this match, and it showed during the first two quarters. As the game progressed, it became clear that Samo was playing on Cypress’s weaknesses and pulling ahead.
By halftime, the score was 5-4 and Samo had settled into their groove. Coach Matt Flanders remarked on how the Samo team pulled through in the second half of the game.
“We had a more disciplined team on offense and defense,” Flanders said.
Samo proceeded to score six goals in the next two quarters and won the game at 11-7.
Team captain, Sawyer Koetters (’19), has led a victorious season. He has a practical, motivational mentality that carries his team through its toughest moments. He’s aiming to play as hard as he can and take the shot to be the CIF champion team.
“This is the season on the line. Win or go home. We will do everything and anything possible to win. If we play our game at a high level, we can pull it off,” Koetters said about the rest of the CIF games.
Samo’s next CIF game is on Nov. 2 vs. San Juan Hills High School.
