Samo cross country took first place as a team in boys’ freshman, boys’ junior varsity and girls’ varsity at the first Ocean League meet at Kenneth Hahn Park on Sept 22, narrowly losing to Beverly Hills in boys’ and girls’ varsity.

After his win in the sophomore race at Woodbridge, Arden Lassalle once again came in first — this time in the boys’ varsity race.

Sophomores Jahangir Habib and Rachel Kiekhofer also came in first in the boys’ junior varsity and girls’ junior varsity races, respectively.

“We all tried hard at the meet, but I know there’s room for improvement,” Wasserman said. “I think we’ll rise above our losses and win league.”

Their next meet was the South Bay Cup, which was held Wednesday, Sept 28, held at Columbia Park in Torrance.

“The boys’ varsity pulled off a third place finish. The boys’ sophomore team placed second,” head coach Tania Fischer said. “Lots of personal records [were set] at this meet (the course is 2.9 miles).”

Their most recent meet was the Kenneth Staub meet on Saturday, Oct 1, held at Crescenta Valley Park.

“The weather was very hot,” Fischer said. “It was a tough course, so the times are slower than [the times of] other courses. Highlights include Arden getting 2nd in varsity race, as well as Alice Wasserman [making] top ten. Jay Hahib ran his first varsity race.”

Cross country’s next meet is the Central Valley Invitational this Saturday, Oct 8.
