Softball wins first league home game against Beverly
After a rocky start to the season, the Samo softball team steadied themselves with a win against against Beverly Hills High School on Tues. April 18. With the final score of 15-0, this moves their Ocean League score to 2-0, keeping them undefeated.
The game was fast-paced, with great pitching by Kyle Walker (’18) and good batting across the board. One noticeable difference from the other team was the high volume. Chants, communication and sometimes even screams kept the team’s energy level high.
“When everyone’s talking we all pump each other up, but when no one’s talking we’re just not into the game as much, mentally,” Gusman said.
The team has been practicing together for a long time and according to Marisol Solano (’17), the defense showed their skills well.
“We work on everything, usually the fundamentals like fielding and hitting, and different spots you can play on,” Solano said.
Like all teams, there’s always room for improvement. According to coach Kalie Nakao (’11), while the girls played well, there’s always room for improvement.
“They’re still working on being more vocal out on the field,” Nakao said. “We’re still making some mental mistakes that we’re trying to eliminate. Talking more [and] having the pitcher’s back, that’s what we really emphasize.”
