Girls’ lacrosse introduces new JV sector

Last year, Samo girls’ lacrosse ended their ’24-’25 season with an overall record of 6-13 and a 0-2 league record. This season, the team has high hopes of making it to CIF with their hard work and dedication.

The team is off to a strong start this spring season, with a 12-5 win against Peninsula High School at their first game on Feb. 19, holding a current overall record of 1-2-0. They play their first home game against Dos Pueblos High School on Mar. 4.

While the team didn’t make it to CIF last season, they are sure to start anew this semester, learning and growing from their past struggles. This year, the team’s main goal is to make it past the second round of playoffs and eventually  to win a CIF championship.

Head coach Brian Patenaude expanded on this.

“The upper classmen are not just hanging out together, the lower classmen are not just together. Everyone’s interacting and getting to know each other. Everyone doesn’t have to be best friends, but the closer everyone is as a team, the better we work together on the field,” Patenaude said.

It was decided this year to form a JV sector of the team, further enhancing players skills who aren’t on varsity. Tehmina Zarin (’26), co-captain of Samo girls’ lacrosse, explained how this will benefit the team significantly.

“The problem with not having a JV is newer players who need game time don’t get game time because they aren’t playing in varsity,” Zarin said. “So that’s something we’re really trying to do because part of the problem with getting improvement is just not having that much game time and it’s hard to simulate that in practice.”

Patenaude emphasized the team’s greatest strength, which is veteran passion and talent.

“We’ve had our veterans coming back, but also, the newer players have clearly shown that they have a lot of lacrosse skills and lacrosse knowledge, which is going to make us even better this year,” Patenaude said.
