Samo beach volleyball battles through competitive season

Following a season defined by resilience and flexibility, girls’ beach volleyball finished their season with an overall record of 2-9-0. After their final game against Mira Costa, the team moved onto a tournament that would determine the teams who make playoffs, where they lost in a single elimination round.

Beach volleyball presents a difficulty because as the seniors finish their indoor season, there is a collective decision to not play beach with the rest of the team. This leaves the juniors and underclassmen to step up and lead the team, which also stands as a great opportunity for junior captains to step up.

For example, Junior Kaeli Horwitz (’27) who has had to step up explains her time on beach volleyball.

“I think it was important to showcase leadership, especially for the younger girls who were used to the senior captains..I wanted our team to be better so I pushed us.” Horwitz said.

Samo’s beach team is placed in the Bay league, playing top teams in the nation, including Mira Costa and Redondo. While the scoreboard didn’t always reflect the hard work that the girls put in, the season was evident of the team's perseverance, growth and commitment.

Every season is a learning experience, especially for the underclassmen who continue to gain experience throughout the year while ultimately doing their best.

Head coach Liane Sato shares her perspective on the season.

“There were moments where I think we had some bumps, but overall we overcame them and learned how to work with them,” Sato said.
